In 2011, Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto contributed a thoughtful text on the work of visual artist Duma, offering a literary perspective on her artistic practice. (PT)

(EN) It is possible to imagine whether the Duma’s women are looking in our direction, whether they are seeing us, but it is not easy to be sure. What makes this definitive difficult is not the absence of the image of their eyes, since their looks are so present, they are undeniable, they have temperature. What prevents us from not knowing their real direction is the fact that we ignore the arrangement of the mirrors that surround them and the thickness of the lens through which we observe them.

The lack of definition of these data does not allow us to know the exact distance they are from us and the precise contours of the relationship we share with them. The lack of definition of these data allows us to know almost nothing about ourselves and, therefore, in the face of shape and color, we are a perspective, someone, an entity that was born on a specific day and arrived here, carrying essential doubts. Life, which seems so much, which seems like everything, is submerged in these doubts. The women of Duma define a world and we cannot know if it is close to ours, and we can kiss them, or if we are seeing it through binoculars, telescopes, and they are forever inaccessible to us.

If there are no mirrors or lenses, then it is even more difficult. We are people and we make little sense in the face of perfection. We can't walk, we trip over ourselves, and we are sure that everyone will be able to understand our flaws. We don't know almost everything about ourselves. We have collected some words that we know nothing about and that we do not want to discuss in the presence of the Duma women. It would be exposing our fragility, our weakness, which is the same as saying: it would be exposing ourselves.

Duma’s women are strong. Even their fragility is a form of strength. Faced with this intensity, optimists rehearse a kind of smile, they pretend, they do what seems most appropriate and right to them, they ignore their reality and play a role, transforming themselves into a character. They believe that this way, the women of Duma will know how to recognize them as equals. The others, in the same place, do not pretend, because they know that, without lenses, they are at a distance where Duma's women will be able to hear them breathe, they will even be able to feel their breath on the surface of their neck, in the delicacy of their skin, pore to pore. They also know that, if there are mirrors, they can be pointed in their own direction and, in this case, Duma's women reflect the certainty that it is mystery and fragility, in each moment of color or shadow, that gives life to life.
