Frame by Frame
DUMA BOOK CATALOGUE
Frame by Frame (2010) is the first monograph by Portuguese artist Duma, published by Campo da Comunicação. Featuring an introductory text by the acclaimed writer Valter Hugo Mãe, the book brings together a curated selection of paintings created between 2006 and 2010. More than a catalogue, it offers an intimate journey through Duma's visual universe, where fragments of feminine figures, cinematic framing, and quiet narratives invite the viewer to imagine the story beyond the canvas. The publication captures the essence of her distinctive aesthetic—minimal, elegant, and emotionally evocative.
Text by Valter Hugo Mãe (EN) Humanity will always face the difficulty of understanding women, because of how mysterious they are and, above all, because they produce absolute fascination. Of course, stories about the unfathomability of the female spirit are not simply sexist. It turns out to be true that women are made up of much of what men are made of, plus doses of intuition, a privileged connection to the earth and a potential glamor that places them in the most sacred place of all. This is what femininity is, a mix of risk, perception and attitude, the universal and timeless recipe for the creation, again and again, of the woman as a muse, loved, desired.
Duma's woman is one, defined by that same seductive and feminine energy that each canvas is made of. She is a very confident woman, busy with small things, with the look of someone who improves herself, right away, from the smallest gestures. There is eminently a man in these paintings, an interlocutor with whom the visible character is in relationship, but what is important to show is this monumental aspect of the female figure. It is the most notable mark of this artist's work, the monumentality of the woman who, without being gigantic or manipulated to become heroic, as would be done in classical art, appears elevated by her own size, placed before our eyes as if demanding contemplation.
The absence of the interlocutor causes, or accentuates, this very thing: the evidence of the woman as a building dressed, adorned, coiffed, endowed with drive. There is a structural sense of the woman in these paintings, also highlighted by the artist's very graphic technique, which causes the image to be constructed in layers, as in levels of color, in a very intelligent engineering of how a figure emerges from the stains. plastics. The result turns out to be of remarkable modernity, proving once again the inexhaustibility of artistic possibilities, how plausible it is to find other formulas and different relevance for the representation of human figuration.
It is not the intention to reproduce the real, because Duma's technique brings out the plastic mannerism that may be more characteristic of illustration, and plays this with the clear idea that it is important to capture the woman in that moment of almost perfection worthy of being admired. She is not a real woman, in an immediate sense, she is a fraction of an almost dream, stopped on a screen for a continuous glimpse of what can only be fleetingly grasped. She is a complex woman, a woman who manifests that stronghold of profound mystique that is femininity and who uncompromisingly carries her most unfathomable characteristics.
This is a femininity manual. An itinerary of subtle ways to bring out the most admired woman. It can be seen as a brief display of women, as if we were faced with the feminine thesis, discursive, coherent, opting for a certain focus on what will be distinctive of the gender, the most distinctive, that delicate underlining of the body, as beautiful as it is aware of itself. The awareness of being a woman is at stake here. The acceptance of the role of women, not as a form of submission but as an exercise of this powerful fascination. This is a thesis for knowing how to be a woman, this monumental woman, as I said before, naturally placed among everything as the most universal of all sources of inspiration, the most coveted and sought after, the most desired and feared, the most persistent and inexhaustible engine of art.
